Not even the most rabid Australian fan could have celebrated after Australia’s record-equaling 16 match win. It is a shame really because Laksman’s enthralling batting, Sachin’s fantastic elegance, Kumble’s courage, Bhajji’s celebratory dance after getting his bunny Ponting, Symond’s amazing if fortuitous batting ,Lee’s belligerence, the tactics of Gilchrist standing up to Sachin and inducing him to play on ,Michael Clarke’s match winning bowling have all been drowned in the controversy of what has been arguably the worst umpiring of all time and even that has been overshadowed by the racist charge on Harbhajan and the consequent three match ban. In fact like the comedian in the Hindi film one is inclined to ask “Ye kya hora hai”?
What a game we almost had
There have been critics of test cricket and they have been justified in their criticism of the game for some time, used as they are to so many dull draws. However despite all the negatives that one can so easily say about the Australian cricket team one must concede that they have been positive and do not take a backward step even in the face of adversity as their mascot depicts. Even at Sydney, they kept playing positively despite the fact that wickets kept falling, as probably they had inside information about how Bucknor and Benson would give decisions! But seriously the match was amazing in its interest levels and standard of play and held our sustained attention till the very last ball was bowled, sadly at times for the wrong reasons.
Umpiring goof ups with a capital G
When I was young the words “Australian umpire” would evoke smirks from the rest of the world. Local umpires, not always competent or just tended to colour, our views on the performance of some of their greats at home. Yes they were good but… Now we have neutral umpires, which certainly removes bias from the equation but mistakes abound. Of course people like Sunil Gavaskar (who despite his numerous accomplishments does not have a positive view on anything in life, are adding fuel to the fire and making an already difficult situation impossible), have always maintained that umpires favour dominant teams and Australia certainly has been a dominant team for the last 12 years. Suddenly the views of people like Shivnarain Chanderpaul on the subject have become popular. My question remains “Would all our comments, criticism been as loud or as crude if we had been the beneficiaries?” Again let me go back to the point of “Umpire management” that I am fond of talking about. After ensuring that because he had a bad game, Steve Bucknor never officiates in an India game, we are ensuring that every umpire who has the “good fortune” of being the umpire for an India game wakes up in the middle of the night in a cold sweat lest his effigy be burnt and lest he make it to the front pages of every Indian newspaper for some errors that might happen. Clearly he and Benson had a bad game, clearly Bucknor is way past his sell by date, but surely there is a better way of dealing with incompetence instead of publicly humiliating him and making him out to be someone out to get our country. The BCCI continues to show its monetary muscle in crises but where is the long term plan to make India a major force in cricket. We may have the money but how are we using all this to further the game in the country and our own standing with the international cricketing community? We are someone who jockeys, threatens and funds. Merely having the financial clout will only take us some distance. There has to be a smarter way which has some level of long range planning.
Racism, something else altogether
As though we did not have enough excitement for one week the Aussies, complained about Harbhajan and testified against him and he now has a three match ban. Has it gone beyond sledging? Imagine the “bad apple” in the class sneaking to the class teacher about another student and getting him expelled. This is exactly what Australia has done and somehow it seems incomprehensible that a country that has sledged right, left and centre suddenly is taking the moral high ground. And I really cannot understand what chip Symonds is carrying on his broad shoulders. Once again there is an opportunity for India to demonstrate how strong it is. Irrespective of what has happened I am sure the ban will be reversed and maybe even Procter too might get a rap on his knuckles. All of this makes one wonder if cricket is really worth watching from 5 in the morning if the activities on the field are going to be overshadowed by such bizarre events like these.
And yet..
Feelings in India are at all time high and emotions are at fever pitch. India is now very different from the way it was thirty or forty years ago. We were poor, bad travelers and the country that other cricketing teams hated to come to, or sent their second elevens. Today all that has changed. We are a vibrant economy with 1.3 billion people, many of whom are avid cricket watchers. Actually the word avid is perhaps an understatement and the right word is cricket mad and herein lies the problem. This nation can be easily swayed by the likes of Sunil Gavaskar and the numerous TV anchors who are playing to the gallery and giving a completely new twist to the sordid episode. Yes Australia won thanks to poor umpiring. It benefited them enormously. But what could they have done about it? If India had got the same largesse would we have declined it? Yes Australia did something unforgivable in ganging up against Harbhajan. Clearly the Sardar has got under their skin. But do we call off the tour for this? Isn’t it an extreme reaction of someone who has suddenly become very rich and powerful and will not let his neighbours forget it.
Calm heads the need of the hour
These are crazy times to live in, work in and watch cricket in. Passions ride high and patience is low. Yet it is not body line we are talking about, just poor umpiring. In any case Bucknor is finished and Procter almost on his way out. So let’s do what Kumble spoke about yesterday. Let’s focus on cricket.
And as for the average cricket fan, my suggestion to you is be calm if such a thing is possible and do not look for skeletons in every cupboard. And as for Star Cricket, just alternate the twenty minute commentary slots between the ones Australians see and the ones we see. That will give us a more balanced view .And finally quickly find replacements for Sunil Gavaskar and Harsha Bhogle otherwise India and Australia will soon become like India and Pakistan.

Good Article Sridhar.
I cant agree with you more about Gavaskar. He has no right to speak about umpires because he is the Chairman of ICC umpires panel and he is responsible for these 2 incompetent entlemen in the middle.
However for some of us who have played cricket at the highest level in the state and who understand the nuances of the game it did not require a Gavaskar's analysis to see the spirit in which the Aussies played the Sydney test. That has been the big takeaway for me from this match.
I like the channel 9 commentary team immensly but I am surprised that neither Ian Chappell nor Michael Slater who were alternating between the 2 channels were balanced in their commensts on the spirit in which the game was played.
The Indian economy is growing at 8-9 % . It can clearly add a percentage to it if 20 % of the population starts looking at life beyond cricket.
I dont see any positives happening to this game. Small following, Acute concentration around the sub continent, Highly regulated (without effective administration of the same), Dictatorial policies determine the way the game is run and the key performers (The players) are not supposed to react !!
I am convinced about the model of this game.It is going no where - ICC does not have the power or the conviction of its decisions. Like you have mentioned the cricket following fraternity is already convinced that Bucknor and Procter will go and the decision taken by procter will be reversed !!!!!
I think the administratorsare also begining to realise this - IPL and ICL are a clear pointers in that direction. Cricket like foot ball will become a club game and go the football way
I don't think India (or any country) can ask for an umpire to be removed as a condition to play. The ICC can close shop if it accepts this principle. And cricket teams can carry desirable umpires along with their cricket kits.
Umpires (elite and others) need to be regularly assessed and you need a system to weed out the non performers and those with failing eysight or hard of hearing cases. This one thought was part of Gavaskar's brief in the ICC. He needs to answer fans rather than ask qns on TV.
Expect Bucknor to report in sick on Jan 16th as the compromise.
Another prediction - Bajji will get a stay for this series allowing him to play.
One is reasonable immune to average umpires and good luck to Australia that most decisions went their way in this match. The rude awakening for the fans who hailed Australia as the role model is that their players have clay feet when it comes to either sportsmanship or the ability to take it when others give it back to them.
It is a pity that none of the cricket experts including gavaskar aren’t aware that the two captains had agreed that they will go on the fielders word for catches since replays are mostly inconclusive and the batsmen usually gets away. The two occasions when he called for the third umpire was to check out on bump ball which is totally different. So benson was right in asking the fielding team. Without being aware of this gavaskar was shooting his mouth off. It is true that India got more decisions against them. But because India somehow so magnificently managed to snatch defeat no one is talking about the decisions which went in favour of us. Sachin was plumb in front to micheal Clarke even before he got to fifty. Dhoni was plumb when he didn’t offer a shot to symonds. Ganguly was out hiding his bat behind his pads pretending to play a shot of hogg. On top of that symonds dropped a sitter of dravid in the second inngs. I thought it was a fantastic game of cricket and aussies deserved to win it, simply because they showed greater selfbelief and aggression although I thought ponting should have declared 10 overs earlier. This 16th victory actually explains how they won the previous 15. They are hungrier than any other team to succeed. And most importantly no one plays for himself. Unlike India. Sachin tendulkar was shielding ishant sharma till he got to 149. And then he took a single at the beginning of the over and exposed him. If only sachin had gone for the shots without worring about averages we might have got a bigger lead and it might have been a different story.
Yes the signs of bad management are there for all to see and the time to act is now.Otherwise the game we all loved will just decay.
I agree with you that Australia cannot take it when they are confronted and Bhajji has been doing that.
I only hope that it is all handled satisfactorily to all concerned.
As usual a very well written piece. However, I would not agree that Stevie (Wonder?) Bucknor has just had a bad day at the office. I have watched a fair number of games umpired by the said gentleman and I would love to see a summary of instances where as the sporting cliche goes "these things have evened out" when it comes to Bucknor saab? If I am not mistaken was'nt it Mr. Venkataraghavan who was railroaded out of the game for less glaring errors, when Australia was involved :-)
Yes he is way past his sell by date and the ICC just refuses to see that.I think Venkat was pushed out ahead of his time.
Read your article on the test match that ended yesterday in a shameful
way for the world of cricket. With due respects to your knowledge and
passion for this sport, I am not in agreement with what you have said.
I hope you are not suggesting that the Indian team management do
nothing with this kind of utter nonsense that is going on.
Get on with cricket, yes, I agree. But only after we take some
concrete steps to ensure there is some mechanism to end this kind of
utterly one sided decisions. It is not just Gavaskar but even Micheal
Holding is of the view that the decisions some how always seem to
favour the Australians in cricketing history. Well today it could be
Buckner but tomorrow there will be some one else who could dole out
such dubious decisions. There must be some way of redressal.
Bajji getting banned for racist abuse is a scream! If BCCI with all
their financial clout have not been able to do anything about the
Indians being singled out for harshest punishments the Indian team
better play for the ICL. (Remember how Ranjan Madugale had handed many
harsh verdicts against the Indians while letting the other (usually
White teams) go scot free.
I am not sure if I will wake up again at 5 am to see the other matches
but being the die hard cricket fan that you are I am sure you will.
Yes I agree that something must be done.Yet I believe the BCCI is making a botch of it again as you can see.If we have the resources can we not get the people who will protect India" cause.Need not have to get up at 5 as the next game is at Perth, assuming there is a game!

I am sure they are hungry for success and this time perhaps desperate. But you see no one wants to talk objectively and are keen to bay for Aussie blood
In his earlier avatar it might have been written by Shankar who has changed his canary and gold to jaundice yellow!
For once I tend to disagree with a lot of your views. Bucknor is way past his sell by date - he was incompetent even 5 years back and should have been removed. The basis for racism is one man's word against 5 and how can you believe that, especially when it is a white skinned verdict.
I am second to none in my appreciation of the Aussie team, but I think India is the only team that can take them on and they know it. Trouble is that they do not have the courage to come out with what is right and stand by their own ( a great virtue except when the person is blatantly wrong).
I would also think that the Indian way of handling the 4th innings is a tragi-comedy. No other team can capitulate the way we do - bad umpiring or not
Yes I think the fourth innings debacle umpiring notwithstanding is really sad.
Yes we compete better than most teams with Australia and they cannot handle it.
The need of the moment is to calm down the passions inflamed by the politicians who run Indian cricket and the media that is thirsty for viewers/readers.You can help do that.
Yes passions are running too high and the intransigent Aussie captain is making things worse.
What I am not able to understand and which no electronic channel
pointed out, is how one brown skinned monkey should be racially
slighted by another brown skin monkey. I mean with my brown skin how
can I insult you racially? I have to be white to do that. Because when
two people have brown, black or yellow skins that are dark skinned.
PERIOD. In the reverse I have to be brown and you have to be black,
for me to be insulted.
Has the modern world changed so much, that even browns can insult
browns racially. It used to be so nice in the good ol days, when
everything was so black and white (pun intended) and clear.
Your point of Bucknor being accorded some dignity is good which has been missed by all. Personally, I lay the blame on ICC who have, especially over the last few years, have made cricket a circus. Neil Harvey said the other day that the only things that have not changed was the length of the pitch, weight of the ball and mm something else... which I can't recall for the moment Interesting eh? And, he went on to say that the game was loaded against the bowlers...that coming from this stylish batsman.
Yes the game is loaded against bowlers and with umpires being the way they are we can only feel sorry for them.
From what I read on India, there is consistency in the inconsistency. But this is true of all teams- India, Australia, England and New Zealand. Different days are different for different teams. We have to find whose day is good today. Thank you for sending your articles and blogs.
